Just encase you didn’t know the Ninja Turtles were all named after famous Renaissance artists: Leonardo was named after the Italian polymath, scientist, engineer, inventor, anatomist, and painter, Leonardo da Vinci. Raphael is named after the Italian painter and architect Raphael Sanzio. Donatello is named after the sculptor Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi. Michelangelo is named after the Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer Michelangelo Buonarroti. (Interesting little fact: The creators of TMNT Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman, chose these names as they both studied Art History and thought Japanese names would sound strange to American readers but they misspelled “Michaelangelo” until 2003.)
